docs/reference/Choosing a model

choosing a model:
fast, or thorough.

Every chat runs on one of two models, and you pick which per chat rather than per message. The picker is named after the plans rather than the models behind them. What matters is how hard it thinks, not what it's called.

01 /The two models

STANDARD
Fast and capable
The everyday tonee, and what every chat starts on. Quick enough to stay in the flow of a session.
PRO
Deeper reasoning
Thinks harder before acting, and takes longer doing it. Available on every paid plan.

Both reach the same set and can do the same things: everything on the commands pages works on either. Nothing is locked behind Pro; it's a difference of judgement, not of reach.

Free accounts see Pro, locked: the row is visible in the picker rather than hidden, so you can see what's there. Any paid plan unlocks it; the paid plans differ from each other on how many messages you get, not on which model you may run.

02 /Which to reach for

The rough rule: Standard for anything where you already know what you want, Pro for anything where you're asking tonee to work out what you want.

Change a level, add a device, fire a clip
Standard
One move, unambiguous. A slower model gets you the same result later.
Write or reshape a MIDI part
Standard
Fine unless the musical brief is unusual.
"Why does this mix feel small?"
Pro
Open-ended diagnosis across several tracks. More thinking genuinely helps.
A restructure with many dependent steps
Pro
Long plans are where cheaper reasoning drifts.
Anything you have had to correct twice
Pro
Cheaper than a third correction.

Pro is slower in a way you'll feel mid-session. Most producers leave chats on Standard and switch deliberately when something needs unpicking.

03 /Switching

The picker sits by the message box. Switching applies from your next message and stays with that chat. The conversation carries on, nothing resets, and everything already said stays in context.

Mid-chat is fine
A common move: work on Standard, hit something knotty, switch to Pro for a few messages, switch back.
Per chat, not per account
A new chat starts on Standard. There is no account-wide default for the model.

04 /What it costs you

Your plan buys two separate monthly allowances, and the chat's model decides which one a message comes out of. A message on a Standard chat spends a Standard message; the same message on a Pro chat spends a Pro one.

Two buckets, not one
Running out of Pro messages doesn't touch your Standard allowance. Switch the chat back and carry on.
Pro is the scarcer one
Every plan gives you far more Standard than Pro, which is the shape of how they're meant to be used.
Long turns still cost one
A message that sets off twenty changes is one message. Length of work isn't what's counted.
Watch it in Settings
Both counters, with what's left and the date they reset, live on the Usage page.

The per-plan numbers are on the pricing page.
