is tonee safe to use?

Short answers to what people ask before they install it: what tonee can change, what it asks first, what you can undo, what leaves your computer, and how the app is signed. Each answer links to the full detail.

what tonee can change

  • It works only in the Live set you have open. It talks to Live through Ableton’s remote-control interface, using one script it installs in Live’s Remote Scripts folder.
  • It never uploads or changes your project file, samples or recordings. It reads an audio clip’s file only to draw its waveform, or to measure it when you ask.
  • It runs only while you have it open, and connects only while Live is running.
  • It changes what you ask for: tracks, clips, devices, parameters, mixing and MIDI notes. Like any AI, it sometimes gets things wrong, so check its work.

it asks before it deletes

New chats start in Auto mode unless you change the default. In Auto, changes tonee can reverse run straight away, and every deletion stops first. It shows a card that names exactly what will go, and flags anything that can’t be undone.

For more control, Ask mode confirms every change, even a fader move. Flow mode also runs the deletes tonee can put back, MIDI notes and MIDI clips, without asking. The mode is enforced by the app, not by the AI, so no instruction can talk it into skipping a confirmation. Full Auto, which never asks, stays off until you turn it on in Settings.

Before a delete runs, tonee rehearses it against your set with every write switched off, then re-checks each target at the moment it runs. If the set changed in between, the delete doesn’t run.

what you can undo

tonee keeps its own record of every change it makes. Tell it to undo, and the last change comes back out in one step. That covers parameter and mixer changes, anything it created, and deleted MIDI notes and MIDI clips.

Some deletions it can’t rebuild, because Ableton doesn’t expose everything inside them: tracks, devices, instruments, audio clips and arrangement clips. For those, press Cmd+Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows) in Live before you make other edits. tonee tells you when this applies.

It keeps the last 25 changes in each session. That is why our terms call undo a convenience rather than a guarantee: keep your own backups too.

what leaves your computer

To answer you, tonee sends two things to our servers:

  • The messages you send.
  • A text description of your set’s structure: track names, device and plugin names, parameter values, sends, scene and clip names, tempo and MIDI notes.

Those go to OpenAI to write the reply. Under OpenAI’s API terms they aren’t used for training (we haven’t opted in), and OpenAI deletes them within 30 days. We don’t use your conversations to train AI models either.

What stays on your computer:

  • Your project files, samples and recordings.
  • Your voice, on the desktop app. Speech-to-text runs on your machine and only the text is sent. The phone app has no on-device speech model, so a voice message there is uploaded for transcription.
  • Anything you play, unless you ask tonee to listen. Then a red recording bar appears, you press Stop, and up to the first 30 seconds is sent for analysis. It can’t start listening on its own.

how the app is signed

  • The Mac app is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so macOS checks it before it opens.
  • On Windows, the Microsoft Store version is signed by Microsoft. The direct download isn’t code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you before it runs. Install from the Store to avoid that warning.
  • Get tonee only from tonee.studio, or the store links it points to.

your account and your data

  • You can delete your account from Settings in the app. Your data is kept for 30 days in case it was a mistake, then permanently removed, apart from the record that you accepted our terms.
  • Crash reports are sent only if you agree, and never contain your project, your audio or your messages.
  • Your sign-in is stored encrypted by your operating system: Keychain on Mac, DPAPI on Windows.

report a bug

Email [email protected] with what you asked tonee to do, what happened instead, and your tonee and Live versions. The same address takes privacy questions.

reporting a security problem

If you find a security problem in the tonee app, this website or our servers, email [email protected] rather than opening a public issue. Please include:

  • What you found and what it lets someone do.
  • The steps to reproduce it.
  • Your tonee version and operating system, if it’s in the app.

We’ll reply to confirm we got it, and tell you when it’s fixed. Please give us the chance to fix it before you share it publicly.
