docs/commands/Mixing & routing

mixing & routing:
levels, sends, signal flow.

Set track levels and panning, dial in sends, change routing, and adjust song settings. All in plain language, all reversible.

01 /Levels

All level controls accept natural language. Say dB values, percentages, or words like "unity", and tonee handles the conversion. Every level change is reversible.

target
example phrase
accepted values
Track volume
"set the sub bass to -6 dB"
Accepts dB, "unity", "half", 0-1.
Track pan
"pan the hi-hats 30% right"
-1.0 (L) to 1.0 (R), or "center".
Master volume
"drop the master to -3 dB headroom"
Master output level.
Master pan
"center the master"
Rarely needed but supported.
Crossfader
"push the crossfader to full A"
-1.0 = full A, 0 = center, 1.0 = full B.
Return track volume
"turn down Return A by 2 dB"
Addressed by name or index.
Check for clipping: "is the master clipping?" takes a meter snapshot and tells you if the peak is above 0 dBFS.

02 /Sends & returns

Reference sends by return track name: tonee resolves "Return A" to the correct index. All send changes are reversible.

Set a send level
"reverb send on the vocal to -6 dB"
"push the delay send up on the snare"
"turn off the return B send on the pads"
Set multiple sends
"set all reverb sends to -12 dB"
"kill all sends on the kick"
Return track level
"turn down Return A by 2 dB"
"mute Return B"
Read sends
"what are the send levels on the vocal?"
"what's on Return A?"
Pre/post fader: the send pre/post toggle isn't accessible through Ableton's API. Set it manually in the mixer. tonee will note this if you ask.

03 /Routing

Input and output routing for any track can be read and changed. Routing is addressed by display name, the same names you'd see in Live's I/O section. tonee reads the available options from Live first so it knows what names are valid.

field
example values
what it means
input_type
"Ext. In", "Resampling", "No Input"
The source category.
input_channel
"1/2", "3/4", "1 (Mono)"
Specific channel on that source.
output_type
"Master", "Return A", "Ext. Out"
The destination category.
output_channel
"Master L/R", "1/2", "3/4"
Specific channel on that destination.

Examples: "route the synth lead to Return A" · "what's the input routing on the vocal track?" · "set the kick input to Ext. In 1"

04 /Song settings

Tempo, time signature, loop range, and playhead position.

setting
example
note
undo
Tempo
"set tempo to 126"
Float BPM. Reversible.
✓
Time signature
"change to 3/4"
Numerator and denominator. Reversible.
✓
Loop range
"loop bars 5 to 9"
Enables loop and sets range. Reversible.
✓
Loop on/off
"turn off the loop"
Toggle without changing range. Reversible.
✓
Jump to position
"go to bar 17"
Moves playhead. Reversible.

05 /Limits

Pre/post fader sends
Ableton's Python API doesn't expose the pre/post toggle. Set it manually in Live's mixer.
Per-track crossfader assign
The A/B/none assignment per track isn't accessible via API. Use Live's UI to assign tracks to crossfader sides.
Send addressing by name
Sends are addressed by index (0, 1, 2…). tonee resolves "Return A" to index 0 by reading the return track list.
Continuous meter monitoring
Meter readings are snapshots at call time, not continuous streams. Ask "is the master clipping?" for a live check.
